Samuel Stone first hears about Thomas Hooker at Cambridge before taking his first position in the clergy. Hooker falls for his future bride Susannah. Whilst Hooker preaches at Chelmsford he meets Stone for the first time and is also summoned to the courts for his outspoken views. Hooker is forced to flee and Stone is now summoned, his friend Thomas Shepard is able to give him a new position. At a secret meeting a traitor is discovered and Hooker flees the country. When he returns they prepare to sail to America. A large group of Puritans board the ship where arguments develop, the group part when they have landed at Boston. Stone threatens the native Indians for some of their land, which the group then moves to, the settlement is named Hartford. Shepard asks permission to marry Hooker's daughter. Hooker argues with Stone about his aggressive stand against the Indians, who are blamed for the theft of supplies. Hooker discovers the real thief too late. Hooker dies and Stone confronts fellow Puritan William Goodwin over politics and Goodwin's courtship of Hooker's widow. Goodwin splits from the group and Stone dies in peace. |
